Naval Announced as Sherwin-Williams’ 2020 Color of the Year

Every year, top paint manufacturers announce their Color of the Year. This color, from the minds of design experts and based off extensive research, signifies trends to represent the coming year. Sherwin-Williams recently announced their 2020 Color of the Year: Naval (SW 6244). This rich navy hue is both calming and confident. According to the company, Naval is the new neutral – it can be paired and matched with anything!

“Naval is reminiscent of the night sky, which people have looked to for centuries for guidance, as a muse and as a reminder to live more mindfully,” said Sue Wadden, director of color marketing at Sherwin-Williams. “Naval merges the desire for rich, inspiring color with our yearning for relaxation and retreat.”

The versatility and significance of Naval is one of the many reasons it was chosen for Color of the Year. According to Wadden, choosing a color goes beyond vanity. An important factor that goes into deciding what color to paint a room is how the color makes you feel.

“People want to feel grounded and inspired to pursue their mental, physical and emotional well-being,” Wadden said.

The Sherwin-Williams Color of the Year is adaptable and cohesive. We expect to see this color all throughout our homes in the coming year. Perfect for bathrooms, kitchens, bedrooms and even exteriors, Naval can be used just about anywhere. The color is also not restricted to one style. Naval is seen in styles from boho to traditional and coastal to contemporary. Mixed in with patterns, or spread evenly across four walls in a room, the color is used as an accent, or as the main attraction.

Sherwin-Williams suggests pairing the color with natural materials such as leather tones, greenery and woven fibers. Experiment with different materials and decorations in the room you are using naval. Add in different plants, area rugs, pillows and wall art with various textures to see how it looks with Naval walls. The color also pairs well with burnished golds like Tarnished Trumpet (SW 9026). Try using Naval on cabinets in a bathroom or kitchen and adding Tarnished Trumpet as an accent color, or through the use of gold or warm brass fixtures.
