If you have a taste for fine living, you’ve landed on the right blog post. Here are J. Wright Building Company, we have a big appetite for building artisan custom homes, which is a great fit for the Jefferson County with all it offers and one of the nation’s best food scenes.

But first, let’s take a step back and look at just how steeped in history Birmingham really is.

Jefferson County was a pivotal player in the Civil Rights Movement. There are many organizations here dedicated to preserving and educating this right of passage, such as the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute. BCRI is a research center and museum that promotes a comprehensive understanding of human rights. The Institute is located in the Civil Rights District, which includes the historic 16th Street Baptist Church, Kelly Ingram Park, Fourth Avenue Business District, and the Alabama Jazz Hall of Fame.

If you’ve spent any amount of time in the greater Birmingham area, chances are very good you’ve seen the “man on the mountain.” The Vulcan Statue, which was christened by the banks of the Cahaba River in 1904, is the largest cast-iron statue in the world. It was designed by Italian sculptor Giuseppe Moretti and was cast from local iron mines. Perched atop Red Mountain, the 50-ton statue was restored to original splendor in 1999 at a cost of $15.5 million.

Besides the mountain man, Birmingham is to home many other famous sons and daughters. Acclaimed country music singer Emmylou Harris is a Birmingham native, as is Paul Williams of the Temptations and Andre Williams a songwriter for Stevie Wonder, Tina Turner, Parliament, and more. Baseball Hall-of-Famer Willie Mayes hails from Westfield, Alabama, and was named National League Player of the Year twice and won 12 Golden Gloves. Basketball Great Sir Charles Barkley and ten-time Olympic medalist Carl Lewis are also from Jefferson County.

But that was then, let’s take a look at what’s cookin’ now.

Since we started building in the Birmingham area in 2015, and have seen a lot of awesome changes to the Birmingham lifestyle. Of course, there are the things that have always made Jefferson County such a desirable address, from the Bessemer Indian Mounds to its technology ecosystem. But did you know that Jefferson County is home to the oldest family-owned restaurant in the United States? The Bright Star in Bessemer opened its doors in 1907, and it’s co-owner Jimmy Koikos ran the restaurant for 60 years until his recent passing at the age of 81. That’s fitting considering that Birmingham has been just been named among America’s top 10 cities with a surprisingly good food scene by the well-known food and travel publication, Fodor’s.

Foodies and picky eater alike agree-Birmingham is the ideal place to live.

Birmingham came in #10 on Fodor’s list, and called out many local favorites by name–including Helen for the biscuits and whipped cane syrup butter and The Fish Market for its fresh Gulf seafood. SAWs BBQ won Bham Now’s Nowie Award for Best BBQ by a landslide and was also applauded by Fodor’s. And that’s just the tip of the ice in an old-fashioned. Birmingham has over 60 nominees and winners of the James Beard Award, one of the nation’s highest culinary honors. That’s truly impressive for a town with a population of 210,000+.
