J. Wright Building Company Partners with Habitat for the Home Builders Blitz

2017 Habitat for Humanity Fall Build FamilyEvery year, Birmingham home builders come together for a fast-paced, one-week homebuilding event to help local families in need. Not only does this event help supply a new home to a deserving family, but it shows the true community of Birmingham by bringing together professional builders, experts in the homebuilding industry, area sponsors and hundreds of volunteers. Our J. Wright Building Company team is proud to reveal that we are one of those volunteers for the 2017 Habitat for Humanity Home Builders Blitz.

As a company who truly loves the art of building and who is dedicated to our Birmingham community, we were prepped and ready to build a single-family home for a family who qualified for homeownership! By volunteering our time, resources and expertise, along with the many other amazing volunteers serving during the Blitz, we are helping a family achieve one of the biggest and most important goals in life.

This year, we are constructing a new home in just seven days in Cascade Parc for a well-deserving family. The first day of the Home Builders Blitz is the biggest and most productive day. Even though the bulk of the work is done months in advance through scheduling and meeting with subcontractors and vendors, the process is still fast and very labor demanding. On day one, the slab is already poured and the subcontractors have set aside time to make sure everything is up to code. By mid-day, the roof is on, the walls are framed and the electrical rough has started. The second day begins the drywall process and from there, the entire house transforms quickly so that it is move-in ready on day seven.2017 Habitat for Humanity home in Birmingham

Built in the East Lake community of Cascade Parc, the former home of the popular Cascade Plunge, this once lively area is beginning to regain its sense of community. The city of Birmingham partnered with Habitat for Humanity to bring new life to this previously popular area, and by the end of the rehabilitation process, the neighborhood will include up to 40 new, affordable homes. Homeowners chosen by Habitat go through a selection process for qualification and must provide documentation that they can afford a mortgage. Potential homeowners also have to be willing to take a financial training class and be ready to contribute hundreds of hours of sweat equity, including working on the construction of their own home.

Greater Birmingham Habitat for Humanity was established in 1987 and is part of a global, nonprofit housing organization that specializes in constructing, rehabilitating and preserving homes. Habitat for Humanity homes are simple, decent and affordable for low-income families around the world. Birmingham’s division is ranked in the top 10 out of more than 1,500 Habitat affiliates in the United States. Volunteers and supporters come together to make this organization thrive by giving every person the opportunity to live in a pleasant home and community. We are proud to be part of such an outstanding organization!
